Our Immigrant Neighbors

There are 4.9 million immigrants (foreign-bord individuals) in Texas which make them 17% of all Texans.

Texas is home to 2.3 million women, 2.3 million men, and 323,011 children who are immigrants. That’s 21% of women, 22% of men, and 4% of children in Texas that are immigrants.

  • 82% (266,331 ) of immigrant children (18 years and younger) in Texas are not U.S. citizens.
  • 41% (1,894,566 people) of adult immigrant Texans (18 years and older) are naturalized U.S. citizens and 59% (2,686,592 people) are not U.S. citizens .
  • More than one third (34%) of Texas children have at least one parent that is an immigrant.

Who are our immigrant neighbors?

40% of immigrant Texans are naturalized U.S. citizens, and of those, nearly one in five were naturalized since 2015.

Most immigrants in Texas are from Mexico (50%), followed by India (6%), El Salvador (4%), Vietnam (4%), Honduras (3%), China (2%), and Philippines (2%).

How educated are our immigrant neighbors?

More than a quarter (27%) of adult immigrants have a college degree (Bachelor’s or higher), while 36% have less than a high school diploma.

17% of immigrants in Texas work in educational services, health care, and social assistance industries; 16% work in construction; and 13% work in professional, scientific, management, and administrative and waste management services.

Where do our immigrant neighbors work?

  • 4% of the civilian labor force in Texas are immigrants.
  • 67% of immigrants in Texas are in the labor force, compared to 65% of non-immigrants in Texas.
  • The median earnings for a male immigrant is $44,207 and $33,931 for a female immigrant in Texas.
  • The median household income for immigrant households in Texas is $58,018.
